Ortega justice dictates 90 days in prison to two drivers of La Prensa

After on Monday, October 3, Daniel Ortega’s justice accused four workers of the newspaper La Prensa for the alleged crime of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity,” the newspaper said that the dictatorship is criminalizing them “for working for the newspaper.

In a statement by the media outlet, published this Wednesday, October 5, the editor-in-chief of La Prensa, Eduardo Enríquez, described the repressive actions “against some people who can only tell them about working ».

“They are inventing crimes and taking them to a process that if it follows the same line that other people have followed, they will be sentenced to long years in prison causing indescribable damage to their lives,” the journalist denounced.

He also pointed out that the imprisoned and prosecuted La Prensa workers did not belong to any political group, much less held decision-making positions in a media outlet, and that they only “are workers and have not committed any crime.”

On the other hand, La Prensa mentioned the precautionary measures granted on September 30 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in favor of its general manager, Juan Lorenzo Holmann Chamorro, who has been in prison since August of last year and has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

The newspaper stated that despite the IACHR’s calls for Ortega to respect Holmann Chamorro’s human rights, the reality is that the measures are only observed “by governments that respect the international legal order. The others do not pay attention to them, and less so those who have decided to leave the OAS,” referring to the Ortega regime.

The outlet recalled that Nicaragua is the only country in the world where there is not a single written newspaper. «La Prensa, almost 100 years old, was forced to stop printing (…) Three of its directors were imprisoned and sentenced to several years in prison, the property, facilities and machinery of the newspaper were confiscated and all its editorial staff he had to go into exile…».

Since the illegal raid on La Prensa, on August 13, 2021, and then the confiscation of its facilities, the media outlet has managed to survive in its digital version, however the dictatorship has not been enough to arrest three directors, rather it undertook “a hunt” against his collaborators, whom he criminalizes in their right to work.
