Cuban Regime Cuts Internet for the Second Consecutive Night

Régimen cubano corta internet por segunda noche consecutiva

MIAMI, United States.- The Cuban telecommunications monopoly, ETECSA, cut off the internet in the country this Friday, for the second night in a rowafter dozens of Cubans in different neighborhoods of the capital came out to demonstrate for the blackout that has left the country in the dark since Monday.

According to graphs of specialized platforms, the cut of this service has been almost general.

“Confirmed: Real-time network data shows internet cut in #Cuba for the second consecutive night; the metrics show a collapse in connectivity after 8 pm local time amid protests over poor conditions and power outages aggravated by Hurricane Ian #CubaPaLaCalle,” the platform published. netblocks shortly after 8 p.m.

The cut of the Internet service had already been denounced by the CubaNet journalist Camila Acosta, who from Havana explained that for the second consecutive night the government had blocked the signal, a mechanism that the regime uses regularly to censor the demonstrations on the island.

According to Acosta, several sources suggest that tonight’s episode has to do with a protest in Boyeros, in which the police have even beaten the demonstrators, and some reports speak of shots. CubaNet so far has not been able to confirm this information precisely because of the lack of connectivity.

In similar scenarios, ETECSA has limited its services to prevent new sources of protest from arising. This was the case on July 11, 2021 (J11) and July 14, 2022, the dates on which the largest demonstrations against the Castro government were registered in the country.

Since last Monday the 26th, a few hours after Hurricane Ian left the north coast of Pinar del Río, the Island has been in a total blackout, according to the authorities due to “an opening in the national electrical system.”
