The right-wing alliance led by journalist Giorgia Meloni’s post-fascist Brothers of Italy party is on track to win a majority in the next parliament.

This follows from the first polls of the elections of Italyat the foot of the ballot box disclosed, this Sunday, September 25, after voting closed.

According to report of D.W.the Italian state television, RAI, assured that its projections give the conservative bloc, which also includes Matteo Salvini’s La Liga and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, between 41 and 45% of the preferences, an amount sufficient to ensure control of both cameras.

These results determine that it is the first time since World War II that the extreme right gains total control of the Executive.

In this way, Brothers of Italy obtains between 22 and 26 percent, while the progressive coalition led by the Democratic Party, led by Enrico Letta, reaches between 17 and 21 percent. For its part, the Five Star Movement, meanwhile, adds between 13.5 and 17.5 percent.

They are followed by La Liga (8.5-12.5 percent) and Forza Italia (6-8 percent).

If the results of Italy’s parliamentary elections are confirmed, Giorgia Meloni, a 45-year-old politician at the head of a eurosceptic populist party, could become the first woman to hold the post of prime minister in Italy.

Meloni was Minister of Youth during Berlusconi’s fourth government, as well as a deputy since 2006.

Italian electoral law favors groups that manage to form coalitions before the vote, giving them a higher number of seats than they should get based on their vote, so the right-wing alliance is projected to win more than half of the seats. Full results are expected in the early hours of this Monday.

Almost 51 million Italians were called to vote on this election day, which began at 07:00 local time, to elect 600 parliamentarians (400 deputies and 200 senators).
