Paraguay leads resolution to maintain the Determination Mission on Venezuela

The statement by the president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, coincided with the release in Geneva of the third report of the Determination Mission, according to which the heads of the Sebin and the Dgcim have committed crimes against humanity to repress the opposition, including torture and sexual violence, through actions that were directly ordered by Nicolás Maduro and his closest collaborators

The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, announced on Tuesday the 20th that his government will lead a resolution together with six other American countries, before the United Nations Human Rights Council, to continue investigating human rights violations in Venezuela through the Fact-Finding Mission, and reiterated its support for the fight for democracy in that country.

“We must provide stability to the world with a common voice, we cannot ignore what is happening in other territories and leave sister nations to their fate,” said the president in his speech at the 77th session of the General Assembly of the UN, the last of his mandate, which will end in August next year.

Abdo Benítez recalled that his country, which broke diplomatic relations with the administration of Nicolás Maduro in January 2019, has “always supported the brotherly Venezuelan people and their struggle for democracy.”

“For this reason, Paraguay will be leading in the Human Rights Council, together with other countries, a resolution that will allow further in-depth investigation of the violation of human rights in Venezuela.”

Abdo Benítez’s statement coincided with the disclosure in Geneva of the third report of the Determination Mission, according to which the heads of the Sebin and the Dgcim have committed crimes against humanity to repress the opposition, including torture and sexual violence, through actions that were directly ordered by Nicolás Maduro and his closest collaborators.

Paraguay’s participation in this resolution became known last september 14. He is accompanied by Brazil, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador. The document must be submitted before September 29 to the Council, which will vote on it the first week of October.

In addition, he expressed his country’s commitment to “sacred freedom” and indicated that the world “requires more than ever temperance, dialogue and moderation.”

“The first great challenge we have is to contain the outbursts of projects that, manipulating genuine citizen irritation, advance with demagogic and despotic actions,” said the head of state, who called for not giving “room to speeches that seek, with misleading offers, sacrificing sacred liberty.

Specifically, he considered that Latin America must be predisposed “to adopt positions of principle that are aligned with the concern for the full validity of human rights and collective self-government.”

On the other hand, he supported Taiwan’s request to be part of the UN system, expressed his solidarity with that island, as well as with Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico due to recent natural events.
