President Gabriel Boric had his first participation in a General Assembly of the United Nations, where he was the third president to intervene after the speeches of the heads of state of Brazil and Senegal. There, the national leader made a clear nod to Salvador Allende, beginning his speech just as the former Chilean President did almost 50 years ago, in addition to mentioning him within his speech.
“I come from Chile, which is a beautiful country located in the extreme south of America, between the Andes Mountains, which is the column of our continent, and the majestic and imposing Pacific Ocean. A country that has a diverse geography and moving passages, where the clearest skies coexist with the stormiest seas, the driest desert with cities made of rain”, the President began in his speech.
The President recalled Salvador Allende’s speech, days away from a new anniversary of the remembered intervention of the former socialist President. “In a few days it will be 50 years since Salvador Allende’s speech in this same front, and where he gave an account of the important social and political changes in our country,” he said.
Following this line, Boric maintained that “in 2019, a large majority of Chilean men and women expressed their discomfort at inequalities and abuses (…) Almost 3 years ago we had to face a serious political and social crisis. We are a country that has been searching for its own path to dignity for a long time.”
