By means of a letter, the president of VenezuelaNicolás Maduro, formally accepted that his country be guarantor in the future resumption of the peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN).
In the letter, the Venezuelan president expressed his intention and willingness to contribute to the work of peace in Colombian society, which is why his motivations for formally accepting to be guarantor country.
“With the beginning of his administration of the Government, President Petroa magnificent opportunity is opening up to reach an end to the armed conflict, a common dream of two peoples sisters in Bolívar. The resumption of diplomatic relations between our countries makes it possible, once again, for us to make every effort to achieve such a transcendental objective,” Maduro explained in the letter.
President Maduro also expressed his happiness at resuming the dialogues that were left suspended in 2016.
“From now on we are activated as a guarantor country. We are at the order of Colombia pto cooperate in everything that contributes to the advancement of the peace process. I hope that as soon as possible we can set a date for the meeting between your Government and the ELN with Venezuela as the venue”, affirmed the Venezuelan president.
Finally, the president of Venezuela assured that Colombia will have to consolidate peace and highlighted a phrase of Simon Bolivar as a synonym of commitment to support the resumption of the dialogues.
