The European Union Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, congratulated the Chilean people for holding the exit plebiscite, but sent a critical message to the Government of President Gabriel Boric so that once and for all they seal the modernization of the Agreement on Association that links the parties since 2003 and that has stopped after the arrival of the current president to La Moneda.
“Chile held a historic plebiscite on Sunday, in which the Chilean people turned out en masse and peacefully and finally chose, by a clear and large majority, not to approve the proposed text of the new Constitution,” part pointing to the statement.
Along these lines, he states that the EU “takes note of the commitment expressed by President Boric and by the entire political spectrum on the need to continue the constitutional process, in line with the desire of the Chilean people for a new constitutional agreement that gathers the support of a vast majority of citizens.
“The EU intends to further strengthen its relationship with Chile, based on our long association and our shared values and interests, and is ready to share its experience in building more inclusive and prosperous democratic societies,” it adds. .
It is in the last paragraph where he puts pressure on the Executive to modernize the aforementioned agreement, which “will pave the way to continue deepening our broad cooperation in areas such as multilateralism, democracy, human rights, gender equality and climate action, inclusive and sustainable development and new business opportunities”.
