The power of anonymity: unnamed accounts associated with Rejection become network authorities

According to the DEEP report from Valparaíso, unlike the 2020 Plebiscite, where the accounts opposed to the constituent process, such as those of José Antonio Kast, Sergio Melnick or Rojo Edwards were the most influential on twitter, today this trend has completely changed. The accounts that operate as network authorities, in the case of Rejection, are anonymous accounts and have a great reach and power of influence among their followers.

In the case of these users, measuring the amount of retweets generated according to their comments, it stands out @carlos81956719 (almost 25 thousand mentions), @TERE_LAprofe (24 thousand mentions), @ELcamionerCL (12 thousand mentions) and @Patitoo_Verde (8 thousand mentions). In the case of the I approve option, there are also anonymous accounts that lead in power of influence, such as that of @Mister_Wolf_0 (More than 45 thousand), although the rest of the network authorities are mostly citizens who do not have a profile public, although they have a great power of influence, like those of @Rojas53C de (more than 30 thousand mentions) or @octoamaro (12 thousand mentions). Other influential accounts in this option are those of the mayor of La Pintana @ClaudiaPizarro (more than 27 thousand mentions).

As explained by Professor Pedro Santander, doctor in Linguistics and director of the DEEP-PUCV project, “What the Rejection does is maintain a network structure similar to the one that existed before the 2020 plebiscite, although it changes its network authorities for accounts anonymous. In some way, it is reflected in the digital world, what happens in the analog world or offline that is for the Rejection, is a campaign where the faces of the traditional right like Kast, Moreira, are hiding, making a withdrawal of known politicians, to be able to citizenize and depinochetize this option”.

For the Director of DEEP-PUCV “the function of these accounts is centrality, they are central nodes that have the function of organizing the community in the network, generating enormous influence within their community with their mentions, if that influence is previously they had public figures, today this influence is given by anonymous accounts”

Approval leads in authors, although rejection has more mentions

According to the same analysis, carried out between August 4 and 22, the I approve option has 1,560,968 tweets from almost 70 thousand users, compared to 1,614,987 from 56 thousand users. “What can be seen in the user-mentions ratio on Twitter in this exit plebiscite is similar to what was seen in 2020, the Rejection option has more activity in terms of mentions, although fewer users than the Approval. That user-mention ratio is maintained, although it is shortened between the 2020 plebiscite and the current one. In 2020 the ratio was 40% to 60% in favor of Rejection and today it is approximately 45% to 55%. We believe, first of all, that Approval learned its lesson and today is much more active on social networks. Second, there is a natural reaction to the wind chill that exists in the polls that give rejection as the winner, and finally, the constant use of fakes news by the rejection has activated the adherents of the Approval” says Pedro Santander.

Approval leads on Facebook and Instagram

In the case of a report made between August 11 and 20 by the DEEP-PUCV, on the Facebook social network, Approval leads with 2,800 posts and 1,600,000 interactions, that is, sharing, commenting, or giving likes. In the case of Rejection, it is 1,163 posts and a little more than 500 thousand interactions.
