Boca Juniors suspended its soccer players Darío Benedetto and Carlos Zambrano for two games for having a fight to blows during the halftime of the draw 0-0 against Racing last Sunday, for the thirteenth date of the Argentine League.
“The Boca Juniors Athletic Club, after the events that occurred last Sunday, informs that the players Darío Benedetto and Carlos Zambrano will not be part of the first team squad in the next two games”, The club announced this Tuesday in a brief statement on its official website.
At the end of the first half against Racing, in which Boca was clearly surpassed by its rival, Benedetto rebuked some of his teammates on the field, including Zambrano, defender of the Peruvian national team.
Returning from the locker room, the Peruvian showed obvious marks on his face and an inflammation on his left cheekbone, which he did not have at the end of the first part, while Benedetto had a mark on his neckpresumably also because of the altercation with the defender in the locker room.
After the match, Boca’s technical director, Hugo Ibarra admitted that “there was a discussion between Benedetto and Zambrano”, but he clarified: “discussions for something in the game always have been and still are in football, for some situation in the game, but no more of that happens.”
Hours later, the second vice president of the club, the former idol Juan Román Riquelme, met with the squad and the coaching staff in the concentration to reproach them for the fight, which was soon exposed in the press and social networks.
In this way, Boca will not have the defender or the forward for Wednesday’s games against Rosario Central, and next Sunday as a visitor against Defense and Justice.
