UN Secretary-General condemns threats of nuclear war

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said this Saturday (6th), during an event in Hiroshima to mark the 77th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city, he considers it unacceptable that countries with nuclear weapons admit the possibility of a war with the use of this type of weapon and warns that humanity is playing with a loaded weapon.UN Secretary-General condemns threats of nuclear war

“We have to keep the horrors of Hiroshima always present, recognizing that there is only one solution to the nuclear threat, no nuclear weapons,” Guterres said. “Nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons are held in arsenals around the world and crises heavily underlined by nuclear spread rapidly, from the Middle East to the Korean peninsula and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

During the event, Guterres called on countries to work to eliminate nuclear weapons. “Countries that have nuclear weapons must commit to not using these weapons and they must also guarantee to states that do not have nuclear weapons that they will not use or threaten to use these weapons against them.”

More than 140,000 people died in Hiroshima as a result of the American attack using a nuclear bomb on August 6, 1945. It was the first time that this type of weapon was used. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.
