For Mara Zaragoza, one of the primary functions assumed by abortion companions is to provide information, which is a human right established in international precepts and which, however, many women do not have.
“The companions perform a primary function, which is to give information, listen to women, resolve doubts. Many companions even give information and this information does not necessarily lead to an abortion,” he clarifies.
Added to this is the fact that they are there at all times, accompanying the procedure, mitigating doubts, fears, anxiety attacks, and sometimes – says Zaragoza – that is not available in the health services.
Safe and free access to medical service
In September of this year, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation set a new precedent for the country in the matter of the ILE, declaring that it is unconstitutional that women and pregnant people who decide to interrupt their pregnancy go to prison, and that they also it is unconstitutional for states to recognize “human life from conception.”
But the criminal codes for which these sentences were directed —Coahuila and Sinaloa, although jurisprudence was established throughout the country— have not modified their penal codes and, therefore, the criminalization of the free interruption of pregnancy is maintained.
This is why Mara Zaragoza considers that it is necessary to validate the existence of all possible ways through which women seek to have a safe abortion and by personal decision.
“There are women who undoubtedly, despite the existence of networks and groups, prefer to seek assistance in health services because they probably feel safer or more protected, but there are a variety of situations that can make women seek services in one way or another, like the companions, “he says.
