The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures to the 63-year-old political prisoner, Evelyn Pinto, after evaluating her situation and considering that “she is in a serious and urgent situation.” Her relatives have demanded that they be allowed to attend to the activist’s health problems.
“According to the requesting party, the proposed beneficiary, who is a human rights defender and identified as an opponent of the current Nicaraguan government, would be deprived of her liberty in inadequate conditions of detention and without receiving the necessary medical care to treat her illnesses and conditions of detention. health, which would be worsening in this context. Likewise, the proposed beneficiary claimed to have been subject to permanent surveillance, as well as stigmatizing and discriminatory acts by prison officers, receiving differential treatment with respect to other prisoners, “highlights the organization.

The IACHR considers that the integrity of Pinto is in “a situation of risk, taking into account that the alleged risk events persist to date and are considered likely to continue to exacerbate.” Since her arrest, on November 6, 2021, the opponent has not been able to undergo her medical check-ups, which are necessary for her health condition, she is currently only receiving primary medical care.
Pinto faces a sentence of eight years in prison, plus a 500-day fine, in addition to disqualifying her from holding public office. Judge Irma Oralia Laguna Cruz, of the First Trial Court of Managua, was in charge of reading the sentence to the hostage of conscience for the alleged crimes of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity” and cybercrimes.
The IACHR asks the regime to “adopt the necessary measures to ensure that the conditions of detention of Mrs. Evelyn Pinto Centeno are compatible with applicable international standards on the matter, including: having contact with her lawyers and legal representatives; it is guaranteed that she is not the object of discriminatory and stigmatizing treatment within the penitentiary center and that an impartial and specialized medical assessment of her current health situation is immediately carried out ».

It also requests that the situation of imprisonment in which the opponent finds herself be assessed and that alternative measures be applied to her deprivation of liberty.
