MIAMI, United States. — The Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR) reported that between June and July of the current year, 35,295 Cuban tourists have visited that Caribbean country.
According to the digital portal Arecoamost of the island’s tourists prefer the destination of Punta Cana, which has become a meeting point for those who seek to vacation with their relatives from Cuba.
Of the total number of Cuban visitors who have traveled to the Dominican Republic between June and July, 32,118 reside in the United States, 1,933 do so in Cuba and another 1,235 come from other countries.
The trips from Havana are possible thanks to the Dominican airline Sky Cana. Frank Díaz, CEO of that company, told Arecoa that Cubans take advantage of the trip to Punta Cana to reunite with their family due to the difficulty in entering the United States.
“They have asked us frequently on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for the family reunion of Cubans who come to Punta Cana and Cuban nationals residing in the United States who come to meet their relatives again,” said Díaz.
Sky Cana is a low-cost airline that currently offers regular services to the Caribbean and the United States from its two command posts: Las Américas International Airport and Cibao International Airport. The company carries out transfer, freight, overflight, helicopter, advertising, air ambulance and tourist services operations.
Although in May only 6,474 Cubans traveled to the Dominican Republic, the number of tourists skyrocketed in June and July, with 17,163 and 18,132 visitors, respectively.
According to MITUR itself, most visitors exhausted an average stay of seven days in Punta Cana.
