Cuba exceeds one hundred cases of COVID-19 in one day

Cuba, COVID-19, dengue, MINSAP

Madrid Spain.- The number of people infected in Cuba by the COVID-19 pandemic once again exceeded one hundred registered cases in one day.

According to a note published this Sunday by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), on July 30, 109 cases were diagnosed (60 women and 49 men), belonging to the age groups of: under 20 years old (64), from 20 to 39 years old (23), from 40 to 59 years old (9 ) and 60 years and over (13).

Of these 109 cases, 87 were contacts of confirmed cases; 3 with a foreign source of infection; 19 with no specified source of infection.

The highest incidence occurs in the province of Holguín (24 cases), followed by Sancti Spíritus (15 cases) and Granma (15 cases). While the least affected is Villa Clara (1 case).

According to the MINSAP note, 2,572 samples were taken for surveillance during the day.

At the end of July, a total of 744 patients were admitted, 298 suspected and 446 confirmed active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the country has accumulated 14,034,207 samples and 1,108,094 positives. According to the health authorities, 8,529 people have died in Cuba due to the coronavirus.

This rebound in COVID-19 cases coincides with the health crisis that the country is going through due to dengue, which has put Cubans on alert in recent weeks.

The disease has claimed the lives of at least eight people (four children and four adults) in the month of July, according to information shared through social networks by relatives of the deceased.

Although the Cuban Minister of Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, denies the collapse of the health system due to the current epidemic, the Mario Muñoz hospital in Matanzas has had to set up new rooms due to the increase in dengue cases.

“Right now there is a significant number of admissions at the Mario Muñoz Monroy. (…) Two adjoining rooms were opened for admission to the facility, one with a capacity for 60 beds and the other with 20,” said Andrés Lamas Acevedo, deputy director of Public Health in the province.

While the director of the hospital center, Yailen Pérez Rosales, declared to the official media Giron: “The outbreak of arboviruses in recent weeks put the center’s care capacities in check, both in terms of logistics and human resources.”

At the beginning of July, the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported that the island was on alert by dengue, and that in 2022 the highest number of outbreaks in the last 15 years had been registered.

This situation is alarming for Cubans who, in addition, have to face the epidemic in the midst of blackouts, lack of medicine and little food.
