Procon-SP: self-service rose 23% since January 2020

The price of meals served in the system self service per kilo rose by 23.76% from January 2020 to June this year. The data are from a survey by the Consumer Protection and Defense Foundation (Procon-SP), released today (21). The research consulted 350 restaurants in the five regions of the city of São Paulo. According to the foundation, the idea is to know and monitor the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on the sector. Three other previous surveys were carried out, in January 2020, October 2021 and February 2022.

In addition to the option per kilo, the calculation also includes the average price of meals self-services with fixed price, executive chicken and dish of the day (or prepared dish). Throughout the research, with each collection, establishments that closed their activities were replaced.

For Procon-SP, this reflects the effects of the pandemic. The researchers also found points of sale that changed the items sold, starting to sell frozen food or lunchboxes. fit.

In the October 2021 survey, 148 establishments were replaced to maintain the equivalent sample. In February 2022, 17 were replaced, and in June, 21.

The survey was carried out by the Research Center of the School of Consumer Protection and Defense, in collaboration with the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).

Numbers

In this calculation, 186 restaurants offer meals in the self service per kilo, with an average price of R$ 68.22; 69 establishments serve the system self service at a fixed price, with an average price of R$ 39.07; 183 offer specials of the day, also known as cooked dishes, at R$27.77, on average; and 101 sales outlets offer executive chicken dishes at an average price of R$33.23.

The researchers applied a comparison relative to the average price of meals self service per kilo, but considering only the restaurants that were repeated in all surveys. The sample in this case, therefore, has 112 establishments.

The following variations were verified: increase of 7.5% from February to June 2022 (the average value was BRL 65.76 and changed to BRL 70.69) and a rise of 10.14% from October 2021 to June 2022 (was BRL 64.18 and changed to BRL 70.69).

In relation to January 2020, the difference is 23.76%, from R$57.12 to R$70.69. The National Consumer Price Index (INPC), of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), accumulated a high of 22.68% in the period.

guidelines

Procon-SP guides the consumer to evaluate the price combined with the quality of the meal offered and always observe their rights.

In the case of meals by the kilo, for example, restaurants cannot inform only the price related to 100g or fail to inform the weight of the dish. In addition, the price of the scale must correspond to the published value.

Restaurants are not required to accept food stamp payment, but if there is a sticker with a certain flag or other information suggesting acceptance, it cannot be refused.

The establishment also cannot charge a waste fee to consumers who leave leftovers on their plate.

Tipping is not mandatory and the venue must inform that payment is optional, in addition to informing the suggested amount.

Whenever a location runs a limited-time promotion, the benefit end date must be shown.
