As of this Tuesday (19), the city of Teresópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, became known as the National Hop Capital.
THE Law 14,414of July 18, 2022, which grants the title to the municipality, one of the producers of this type of plant in the country, is published in the Official Gazette of the Union today.
Hops is the name given to a type of vine that grows mainly in cold climates. Scientifically, it is called humulus lupulus. The plant is widely used in beer production and in the therapeutic sector, especially in the treatment of liver and digestive problems.
Widely used in the brewing industry, hops act to give the drink a smell and bitter taste and to form the foam, one of the characteristics of the product. In addition, hops act as a natural preservative, inhibiting the proliferation of bacteria and thus helping to prolong the shelf life of beer for consumption.
The first nursery authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply for the production of plant seedlings is located in Teresópolis. This occurred in 2018, after Viveiro Ninkasi fulfilled a process with the National Registry of Seeds and Seedlings (Renasem).
