Congressman for Democratic Change Edward Reymundo presented a bill to establish that the former presidents of the Republic elected by popular vote only receive the Life penssion as the only benefit after leaving the Government Palace.
Bill 2660/2021-CR proposes to modify article 1 of Law 26519, a law that establishes a pension for former constitutional presidents of the Republic, in order to add the following statement:
“This pension will be the only benefit they receive for having held the position to which they were constitutionally elected. The vice presidents and the president of Congress who assume the temporary functions of the president of the Republic will not enjoy said pension.

The initiative also seeks to change article 4 of the aforementioned rule with the aim of repealing “any provision that has provided another additional benefit” to former presidents.
If the legislative proposal is approved, the Board of Directors Agreement 078-2016-2017/MESA-CRwhich grants former presidents the loan of a vehicle, an assistant with a salary of no more than 3,700 soles and fuel vouchers with a cap of 150 gallons per month.
Sagasti, Merino and Vizcarra requested life pension
In 2021, former presidents Francisco Sagasti and Martín Vizcarra, as well as former de facto president Manuel Merino, submitted their requests to Congress to access the life pension and other benefits.
