Deputies approve fines for non-voters

The Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that establishes punishments for citizens who do not exercise their right to vote. This is the bill that modifies and expands article 332 of Law 834/1996, “Establishing the Paraguayan Electoral Code (Fine for not voting)”.

The project establishes that people who go to Identification to renew their personal documents must pay a fine of half a day (G. 49 thousand). Now it goes to the Executive for its promulgation or veto.

Basilio “Bachi” Núñez, national deputy for the ANR (chartist), stated that the National Constitution dates back to 1992 and that there are factors that are no longer present.

“Third space parties want to impose on citizens to put their hands in their pockets more for not going to vote. We have 300,000 unemployed who will have to pay fines for not going to vote. We are going to sign their civic deaths, ”he stressed.
