5th National Meeting of Cooperatives in the commune

This Thursday the 18th, the opening ceremony of the 5th National Meeting of Cooperatives was held at the Montevideo City Hall, in which government authorities participated. The event is organized by the Uruguayan Confederation of Cooperative Entities (Cudecoop) and will run until August 20.

The fifth edition of this meeting aims to strengthen the links of the national cooperative framework. In Uruguay there are more than 3,500 cooperatives in which 1,000,000 cooperative members take part.

With the participation of national and foreign speakers, three thematic axes will be addressed:

  • Cooperative identity and collective bargaining
  • Public policies for the promotion of cooperatives
  • Intercooperation (business and cooperative exchange)

Work will be done on the agenda proposed by recommendation 193 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the degree of implementation of these guidelines in public policies and in the strategy of the national cooperative movement.

The sustainable condition of the cooperative movement will also be deepened, so that during the event the environmental impact of its execution will be minimized. This purpose is aligned with the Montevideo more Verde strategy of the Intendancy.

In this sense, 2021 ended with 260 active social cooperatives and in the first half of 2022 there were 271. In addition, in the first six months of this year, there were 4,110 jobs generated in these entities, while 2021 closed with 4,000 . This is explained by a greater conversion to worker cooperatives, explained Lema. Likewise, the issuance of certificates of regularity increased, from 112 in 2021 to more than 140 in the first part of 2022. 57% of social cooperatives are made up of women and the remaining 43%, by men.
