3,900 people were housed in shelters on the first day of the Mides special operation

Before the cold wave announced by the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) for the southwestern, central, eastern and northeastern areas of the country starting this Saturday and that will last until next Monday, the Ministry of Social Development (Mides) announced that a special operation would be carried out since last morning in coordination with the Ministries of Defense and Interior, ASSE and the Congress of Mayors.

The plan implied a reinforcement of the territorial work of the Mides in what are the contingency night centers, where the time of entry will run from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense provided military units so that Mides can increase its shelter quotas, while the Ministry of the Interior collaborates with the different transfers to shelter centers or military units.

According to Mides data, This Friday, a total of 3,900 places were filled out of the nearly 4,000 total places available throughout the country. That number of occupied places includes 34 people who were housed in night hostels, and 70 who did so in military units.

Total, 234 reports were registered to the Ministry to notify about homeless people who were sleeping outdoors.

The meteorologist Néstor Santayana explained to The Observer that the cold wave will not affect the entire country, despite the fact that “very low” temperatures will be present throughout the territory, with minimum that will oscillate between -2°C and 2°C and maximum between 10°C and 13°C.
