3-1: Pachuca, champion in Mexico

The Tuzos from Pachuca Uruguayan coach Guillermo Almada became the new champions of Mexican soccer this Sunday, beating 3-1 the Toluca and defeat him 8-2 in the final of the opening tournament. The Mexican Víctor Guzmán and the Argentines Nicolás Ibáñez and Gustavo Cabral scored for the Tuzos and Raúl López discounted for the ‘Devils’.

After losing the first leg last Thursday at their stadium 5-1, Toluca came out by a miracle, scoring a goal every 20 minutes without conceding. He went ahead against a rival waiting patiently, however, he did not create danger.

It was the Tuzos who were closest to the goal. In the 9th minute, Ibáñez, the championship’s leading scorer, received a pass from Kevin Álvarez and shot from the outside, and in the 13th minute, Erick Sánchez shot a ball from the right that was rejected by the Brazilian goalkeeper Tiago Volpi.

Toluca struck the expected blow in minute 21, a right-footed goal by López, on an assist from Paraguayan Carlos González, in a play in which Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari reacted badly. Volpi saved Toluca in minute 26, in a left-footed shot by Luis Chávez, after which the local team generated the best plays.

At 45+2 Ibáñez missed a penalty, but a minute later the Spaniard Paulino de la Fuente shot on goal and Guzmán grabbed a rebound from Volpi to tie the game and return to the final with everything in his favor.

Pachuca put the tombstone against the Devils in minute 52 with a forehand goal from Ibáñez to break the tie and put the series 7-2, an abysmal difference, with 38 minutes to play. After a while of fighting in the midfield, in minute 74 Gustavo Cabral converted a penalty to increase the final score to 8-2, one of the widest differences in title dispute series in Mexico.

Pachuca confirmed itself as the most successful team in Mexican soccer in the last quarter century, adding its seventh league title since 1999 to its five Concacaf titles, the 2006 South American Cup and a third place in the Club World Cup. Toluca, who fought until the last minute, maintained the league title drought, which reaches 12 years.
