During the first days, the Ukrainian community in Mexico carried out different mobilizations, some in the Angel of Independence, the center of the capital and the Memory and Tolerance museum, among other places, as well as the organization of economic and food collections.

100 days of war have already passed and they assure that their efforts to pause their professional activities and turn to support the Ukrainian refugees have been worth it, since of the more than a thousand who at some point set foot in the capital, the majority are already in the United States. “Life did not give me to simply watch the news, I went out into the street, I started doing everything that came my way, organizing marches, a collection center, working with migrants,” Illona said.

“Music is ok, it’s important, but right now I’m 100% into it, since 100 days have passed, I’m trying to return to my normal life again to have an income that allows me to continue with this,” said Elisa.

According to Illona and Elisa, from March to date, more than a thousand Ukrainians have arrived in Mexico City, some of them through the aircraft sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Romania to rescue Mexicans. , but others did it on their own.

Although the Mexican authorities set up a camp in Iztapalapa to receive the Ukrainian community as refugees, about 800 -according to the mayor’s office- used the facilities as a brief stopover, since their objective was to travel to the United States where they already family or friends were waiting.

100 days after the war, around 60 Ukrainians remain in Mexico, although no longer in camps, but in various houses both from the community of that country or from Mexicans who voluntarily decided to adopt a family while their immigration status is resolved. .
