10 died when bus with Venezuelan migrants fell into a ravine in Colombia

This Saturday, July 22, at least 10 people died and another 30 were injured when a bus full of Venezuelan migrants plunged into a ravine near the Colombian city of Bucaramanga, in the north of the country.

Up to 40 people were traveling on the bus, owned by the Brasilia company, in the direction of Valledupar to begin a journey with the United States as the final destination, when the vehicle fell into a ravine during its journey on the Bucaramanga-San Alberto highway, according to reports from local authorities to Radio Caracol.

The injured were distributed between the hospital of the municipality of El Playón and that of the city of Bucaramanga, while the Police investigate the exact circumstances of the incident, reported The truth.

The mayor of El Playón, Santander, Wilmer Barrios, revealed details to the Q’hubo Bucaramanga medium of what happened.

According to the report of the local president, the bus fell into an abyss of more than 100 meters, which has made it very difficult to rescue the victims. He also reported that about 40 migrants of Venezuelan origin were mobilizing in the public transport vehicle.

“According to what the people who were on the bus told us, they were traveling to the United States in order to seek a better future,” Barrios declared.

He indicated that the injured were transferred to El Playón and many were sent to Bucaramanga due to the complexity of the injuries.

“Communications with the accident site are very bad and we still don’t know who the people who lost their lives are. They tell us that there are about 10 deaths, that is what we know so far,” the mayor concluded.

The accident occurred at 5:00 am at a time when the bus was traveling at kilometer 58+691 meters of the road between Bucaramanga and San Alberto, in the jurisdiction of the municipality of El Playón, Santander.

In the sector known as Límites, when the driver took a curve, he continued straight ahead and left the road, rolling 200 meters into the abyss.

After the accident, the drivers who were circulating on the road at that time stopped, notified the authorities, and began the rescue work.
