The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year 9.9 million people become ill with tuberculosis and at least 1.5 million die. It is one of the deadliest infectious diseases, despite the fact that it is curable and preventable.

Within the framework of World Tuberculosis Day, which is commemorated every March 24, it warns that this disease, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is present worldwide and affects all age groups.

The multinational organization points out that every day 4,100 people die from tuberculosis, while another 30,000 contract the disease. It is already considered the leading cause of death among people with HIV and is a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance.

with the motto Let’s invest to end TB. let’s save lives, highlights that it is estimated that between 2000 and 2020, 66 million lives were saved thanks to the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. However, he emphasized that this year 13 billion dollars are required for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of tuberculosis.

He also recalled that one of the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals is to end the tuberculosis epidemic by 2030.
