Zulia: Two-year-old boy drowned in the Kunana River

Today, Wednesday the 2nd, the corpse of a Yukpa boy was rescued who was dragged yesterday, Tuesday, by the waters of the Kunana River in the Machiques municipality.

According to the report of the Machiques Fire Department, who acted in the procedure, the search began once they received notification from Katiuska Romero, mother of the child identified as Yeider Hernández Romero.

According to the story, Romero took his two-year-old son while he was looking for firewood and when crossing the river – passing through the Toromo basin at the height of the Medellín farm – the force of the current made the minor drop his hand to his mother, being dragged by the waters.

Search and rescue commission activated

Romero’s relatives went to the security agencies to report the event and a commission was immediately activated, made up of officials from the Machiques Fire Department, Civil Protection and Park Rangers.

Several members of the community also joined the search, they all walked the banks of the river but were unable to find it.

Today, in the morning hours, the security agencies restarted the deployment accompanied by relatives and neighbors of the Tomoporo community.

They managed to find the inert body of the minor Yeider Hernández, two kilometers from the place of his disappearance, specifically near the Yuturba school, in the same indigenous basin.

The Kunana River is part of the spas that are within the Sierra de Perijá National Park, located in the northeast part of the Machiques municipality, which represents one of the recreation spaces of this town.

Machiques de Perijá, is a town located less than an hour from the Sierra -with a Yukpa and Barí population- who have managed to preserve their ancestral traditions such as crafts. In addition, the largest number of teachers in schools belong to these original peoples.
