Educator Marlon Díaz served as general director of the Mayor’s Office before his appointment as a rule in charge
The municipal council of Almirante Padilla, in the Zulia state, appointed educator Marlon Díaz on Tuesday, April 15 as mayor in charge of the jurisdiction. The decision was made a month after the authorities arrested Mayor Alberto Sobalvarro for drug trafficking.
Díaz served as general director of the Mayor’s Office since 2021, when Sobalvarro assumed municipal power.
“From today we begin to work as a unit of unity to guarantee all the benefits granted by President Nicolás Maduro to our island people,” said the mayor in charge after being sworn in, at a press conference.
Sebin and UNB officials arrested on March 13 to Sobalvarro at their home in Isla de Toas, capital of Almirante Padilla, for their alleged link with mafias dedicated to drug trafficking.
The Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, confirmed the arrest of five mayors between March and April for drug trafficking, four of them from the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and one of democratic action.
In addition to Sobalvarro, the other four were the mayors of Guajira, Indira Fernández; by Jesús Enrique Lossada, Danilo Añez; from Catatumbo, Fernando Loaiza; and Jorge Nava, from Miranda.
Cabello accused them of working for drug cartels that send shipments to Central America and the Caribbean along the Venezuelan coasts.
