Zoraima Cuello: Reality reflects a situation different from economic growth

Zoraima Cuello: La realidad refleja situación diferente al crecimiento económico

SANTO DOMINGO.- The reality that Dominican families experience reflects a different story from the celebrated economic growth of 5.1% announced by the Central Bank in the report at the end of 2024.

The statement is made by Zoraima Cuello, vice president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), who, in contrast to the growth of the economy, presents the high cost of the basic basket, labor informality, precariousness in the quality of employment and the indicator that measures the degree of inequality in the distribution of income or consumption (Gini) in growth.

“While an economic growth of 5.1% is celebrated according to the latest report from the Central Bank, the reality that Dominican families experience reflects a different story. The constant increase in the cost of the basic basket, the persistent labor informality that affects 56% of workers (ENCFT, 2024), a growing Gini coefficient and an employment quality index, which remains precarious (MEPyD, 2024 ) show that this growth does not translate into well-being for the majority,” considers Zoraima Cuello in the work titled “When growth is not enough. For a 2025 of hope”, published in the newspapers Acento and Vanguardia del Pueblo.

When describing the limiting situations, the former candidate for the vice presidency of the Republic of the PLD, considers that it is necessary to promote urgent structural transformations and fundamental changes.

In this direction, Zoraima Cuello, doctor in Education with a specialty in Organizational Leadership and Knowledge Management, proposes twelve individual and collective goals for the year that has just begun as an invitation to transform our reality.

Among the purposes it suggests are: Greater support for Youth, support for small local entrepreneurs, promoting women’s leadership in different areas, educating for competitiveness, working on prevention and comprehensive health, working to overcome lags in innovation and the persistent digital divide.

In the purposes and goals for 2025, Zoraima Cuello also cites citizen participation, which she understands is the heart of a real democracy, protection of the environment, being bridges of dialogue, practicing gratitude, promoting a culture of peace and maintaining hope .

In conclusion, Cuello makes the clarification that his proposal is not an invitation to settle for small actions when we need major structural transformations, which is what it is about, he says “it is a call to build from below, while we demand the fundamental changes that our country deserves.” .
