The challenge with IMSS Ordinary
Currently, the Social Security has been financially viable for just 13 years. Although this is a higher projection than that estimated in other six-year terms, after the IMSS faced a severe financial crisis, actions are still required to maintain the financial health of the Institute.
“More than eight decades after its creation, the IMSS continues to face significant financial and operational challenges,” states the Report on the Financial Situation of the Institute 2023-2024.
This requires financial discipline, but without affecting the quality of services or reducing medical consultations and infrastructure, as occurred during the administration of PRI member Enrique Peña Nieto.
The increasing pension payments for IMSS workers, the increase in and care for chronic-degenerative diseases, and the aging population generate high costs for Social Security.
Therefore, the challenge is to ensure that both IMSS Ordinario and IMSS-Bienestar beneficiaries receive quality care.
“It is an ideal that has become a mission,” Robledo said in a letter to Sheinbaum after his appointment.
With the creation of more jobs, an increase in the minimum wage and better collection of contributions, Zoé Robledo has improved the income of the IMSS, but is not yet out of the woods.
So during Claudia Sheinbaum’s six-year term, the challenge for López Obrador’s trusted official will continue to be twofold.
But Zoé Robledo has promised the virtual president-elect all his “commitment, emotion and energy to consolidate the health system that the people of Mexico deserve.”
