Zapatero calls for strengthening dialogue in Venezuela

The former president of the Spanish Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero spoke about the recent decision of the United States to recognize the opposition Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect of Venezuela, Telesur reports.

Although he avoided directly evaluating this measure, he stressed the importance of analyzing the “effects” that this decision may have. In this context, Rodríguez Zapatero proposed a political dialogue as the only viable solution. “There must be a political dialogue in Venezuela, beyond any circumstance, because it is the only way out,” he stated, adding that we will have to observe “how the new Donald Trump administration approaches the situation” and what the position of the European Union in this regard.

On the other hand, the former head of government warned about the possible repercussions of the unilateralist approach that Republican Donald Trump could adopt after assuming the presidency of the United States.

“If a country says: mine first and the only one, with tariffs, trade war and unilateralism, it will be an absolute disaster for the world,” he said.
