Zapatero asks to bet on hope and reconciliation: “I see a clear will”

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero

It was learned that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will meet with Delcy Rodríguez at the Miraflores Palace and with representatives of the opposition such as deputy Henrique Capriles and former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez

Former Spanish president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero affirmed that Venezuela has the possibility of having a future of progress and democratic coexistence, which is why he urged to bet on hope and reconciliation.

«…that is such a powerful hope, to reconcile, to embrace someone you have considered your enemy…there are many things that unite us. That has an unstoppable force. “Hope always comes before fear or resentment when there is a clear will and I see a clear will, we have to do for it and bet on it,” he said in statements to the media.

Zapatero arrived in Caracas to participate in the “Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence”, a commission created by Delcy Rodríguez, who after the capture of Nicolás Maduro was in charge of the national Executive and works in collaboration with the government of Donald Trump that established a three-phase plan for Venezuela: Stabilization, recovery and transition.

The former president was convinced that Venezuela will undergo an amnesty process very soon and will be – in his opinion – one of those that is applied the fastest compared to other countries that have gone through similar and even worse conflicts.

“From there the task of coexistence, of encounter, of reconciliation is a task of dialogue, of giving each one the best of oneself,” he noted.

Zapatero said he has “great confidence in Delcy Rodríguez”, who – he said – is taking rapid steps in record time to generate hope in the country.

He expressed his satisfaction with the amnesty bill being discussed by the National Assembly. “It is an ambitious law, it is a law that the entire Venezuelan society is wanting.”

A statement from Zapatero’s office explained that he was invited on January 30 to participate to present his “opinions and experiences in promoting dialogue.”

Although Rodríguez Zapatero’s agenda has not yet been officially announced, it is known, according to a Cadena Ser source, that he will meet with Delcy Rodríguez in Miraflores; as well as representatives of the opposition, among them supposedly the deputy Henrique Capriles and the former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, who was detained for more than a year.

The “Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence” is an initiative that aims to consolidate a great national dialogue, promoting tolerance and respect between political and social actors in the current political context.

Delcy Rodríguez was in charge of the Executive after the US military forces entered the country on January 3 and captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and transferred them to New York, after facing accusations of drug trafficking.
