Minister Cristiano Zanin took office this Tuesday (13) as substitute minister of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the body responsible for organizing the elections.Zanin takes office as substitute minister of the TSE

Zanin, who is also a member of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), will act during the absences of the Court’s ministers who also make up the electoral court.

The TSE is made up of seven ministers, three from the STF, two from the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), and two lawyers appointed by the President of the Republic.

The court is composed of the president, minister Cármen Lúcia, the vice-president, Nunes Marques, and the ministers André Mendonça, Raul Araújo (STJ), Maria Isabel Galotti (STJ), Floriano de Azevedo Marques and André Ramos Tavares, both of whom come from the legal profession.

Zanin arrived at the Supreme Court after being nominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and being approved by the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) and the plenary of the House.

The minister took the place left by Ricardo Lewandowski, who, in April 2023, compulsorily retired upon reaching the age of 75 and left the STF.

Before being appointed, Zanin acted as Lula’s lawyer in the Lava Jato Operation trials.

The minister holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Married to lawyer Valeska Teixeira Zanin Martins, he has three children.
