Venezuela has the full support of Russia in the face of the aggressions that the United States carries out against the country under the pretext of fighting against drug trafficking, confirmed yesterday the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, María Zajárova.
“We reaffirm our solid support for Venezuelan leaders in the defense of national sovereignty. We advocate for the preservation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace,” reported the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Along these lines, Zajárova pointed out the importance of “adopting measures to reduce tension and facilitate the search for solutions to existing problems in a constructive manner and respecting international legal standards.”
He said that Russia rejects the use of force by the US in actions to combat alleged drug trafficking groups in the Caribbean area.
“We strongly condemn the application of excessive military force when carrying out anti-drug tasks. Actions of this type violate both US domestic legislation (…) and the norms of international law,” he stressed.
These violations are recognized by representatives of several countries and international organizations, including the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said the diplomat.
At the same time, the spokesperson stated that bilateral relations between Moscow and Caracas “are developing in an upward manner in the spirit of strategic collaboration, are not subject to fluctuations in the external environment and cover areas of mutual interest.”
“At the same time, issues relating to strengthening defense capabilities and ensuring security are the responsibility of the relevant ministries of our countries,” he concluded.
This is the second statement by Vladimir Putin’s government in support of Venezuela in a week.
The national government expressed its “most sincere gratitude to Russia for its unwavering support in the defense of Venezuelan sovereignty.”
“Today, Russia and Venezuela are consolidating themselves as strategic allies, and we are ready to strengthen our cooperation in key areas of development and mutual progress,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil, who expressed these words on behalf of Maduro.
