“Good morning to all my community of Jerez de García Salinas, as many know I am a candidate for Queen of Carnival 2023, today I announce my retirement from this contest to show empathy and respect for what unfortunately is It happens that many families have a hard time, therefore, I want to thank the people who were behind me supporting me, I am here to raise my voice for all those who are missing, thank you very much,” said Diana, another of the candidates.
In total, seven young people competed in the contest in Zacatecas. None will attend the event. On social networks, they all joined in supporting the families that experience violence in the Zacatecan municipality.
Humberto Salazar, mayor of Jerez, said that he respected the decision of the participants, but asked to “preserve the traditions.”
“I join the pain that our population is experiencing due to the recently recorded events that have altered the peace and tranquility of our people, who are good and hardworking,” said the politician. “We have taken the necessary steps for the arrival of more state and federal public security forces, we will continue to insist,” he added.
Multiple homicides and disappearances of people have been registered in recent months in Zacatecas.
Zacatecas’ territories are currently disputed by the Jalisco, Pacific, Northwest and Gulf cartels, as well as a local organization called Los Taliban. According to Mexican authorities, more than 80% of homicides in the region are linked to these disputes.
The entity dedicated to mining has been placed on travel alerts issued by the United States so that its citizens avoid visiting it. That is Zacatecas 2022.
