The government of Venezuela asked this Monday, in a speech during the opening session of the UN Human Rights Council, that The United States immediately release Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, captured on January 3 in Caracas.
This was one of the demands that Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto raised in his speech at the human rights forum.
“Venezuela’s sovereignty was seriously violated by an unjustified and illegal military attack that resulted in the loss of 100 lives. This attack was aimed at illegally detaining President Nicolás Maduro, a head of state with sovereign immunity, as well as his wife and National Assembly deputy Cilia Flores,” he said.
He also demanded the cessation of all sanctions against his country and that there be general respect for the sovereignty of States.
“The human, social, economic and cultural rights of our people have been systematically violated for more than a decade due to unilateral coercive measures, extremist violence and, more recently, a military attack that resulted in the kidnapping of our Head of State,” express.
He criticized the UN reports on Venezuela
Gil criticized that the United Nations has not “taken a firm position against these violations” and accused her of authorizing the publication of reports that show human rights violations in the country, which he described as “biased and politicized.”
Along these lines, he denounced that Maduro was arbitrarily detained and in the “full exercise of his functions”, in an operation that left at least 100 dead.
“Venezuela demands the immediate cessation of coercive measures, a human rights agenda that is impartial and without political selectivity, respect for the sovereignty of the States and the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores,” he stated.
However, he also stressed that the Venezuelan authorities have opened with the United States “a diplomatic channel to resolve differences”, but “not from subordination”, but “from the conviction that dialogue is the only civilized path between nations.”
Gil also mentioned as proof of the good will of the government now led by Delcy Rodríguez that Venezuela has recently renewed cooperation with the UN Human Rights Office.
He also explained that in this way “they reopen spaces for technical dialogue” with that organization.
