Yurani Vanegas is the rescuer who, on the afternoon of Friday, August 16, risked her life in a voracious, large-scale fire in Ibagué. In the midst of the tragedy, she managed to rescue a cat that had been trapped from the flames.

The emergency originated in one of the establishments on 19th Street and 5th Avenue and quickly spread to other businesses in the area.
The accident, which destroyed a commercial establishment and affected other premises, was the scene of a tragedy in which a heroic act went viral on social media, saving the life of an animal.

Upon arriving at the scene, Yurani joined the cat’s owner in the desperate search. After hearing the frightened feline’s meows, she broke the structure where she was trapped to get her out.

In an interview with the media outlet Ecos del Combeima, the rescuer said: “There is nothing that breaks my heart more than seeing people suffering and defenseless little animals.”
The kitten was on the stairs, but then moved and became trapped, almost fainting. When she heard her owner’s voice, she began to meow. Yurani said that she had to break the structure with her hands to get her out. “We are always here to help,” she said.
How was the feline treated?
The cat received treatment at a veterinary clinic and is being monitored for smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no human losses were reported.
In parallel, the Ibagué City Hall, under the direction of Mayor Johana Aranda, continues with the assessment and support work in the affected area.
