Youth and work in a post-covid world

While the International Congress of researchers on childhood, adolescence and youth is in session in Havana, this approach to the binomial work and youth in the world could be relevant.

Above all, because the Director General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Guy Ryder, has assured that a real recovery from this pandemic cannot be achieved without a general recovery in the labor market.

And in said labor market, young people are among the most vulnerable, especially considering that they were faced with moving from the academic world to the labor market precisely when there were fewer available jobs due to the health crisis that, obviously, had an impact on all areas. of human existence.

In order for the necessary recovery in the workplace to be sustainable, it must be based, the ILO Director-General insisted, on the principles of decent work, including health and safety, equity, social protection and social dialogue, he sentenced.

But young people globally will still have a hard time with regard to employment as the closure of educational and vocational training institutions “will have a ‘domino effect’ for young people in particular,” according to the latest ILO report. , World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2022.

Hence, for this and other reasons, the recovery in the world of work at a global level will be slow, according to ILO predictions.

“We are already seeing potentially lasting damage to the labor market, along with a worrying rise in poverty and inequality,” said Guy Ryder.

Consequently, with such a panorama and with a view to expanding the action and the impact on youth employment, the global initiative is “Decent Jobs for Youth”.

And the statistics are there, like sledgehammers, to support such a claim: Worldwide, more than 123 million young people are working, but live in poverty; around a fifth of young people are without employment, education or training (the so-called NEETs).

In Latin America and the Caribbean in particular, women are the majority among young people without work or education, and close to 3 million young people work, but live in poverty.

Hence, the issue of youth employment is a great challenge, and especially that of enabling decent employment, in conditions of security, equality and dignity, which will be what will translate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into reality.
