SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- Cuban political prisoner Lázaro Jesús Valdez González-Fune, who is serving a sentence for his participation in the protests of July 11 and 12, 2021, partially lost his vision due to lack of medical care in Combinado del Este, according to the complaint made by the Cuban activist Marcel Valdes.

Valdez González-Fune, 33, a resident of Havana, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and is currently in Ground Zero of Combinado del Este, where he does not have access to the medications he needs to treat his diabetes.

According to Marcel Valdés’ text, Lázaro needs to inject himself with insulin up to four times a day, but he does not receive it in prison. His family is also unable to obtain the drugs due to the severe shortage of medicines in the country.

“Because of that and the poor diet, Lázaro is losing his sight; he can hardly see far away anymore,” said Valdés.

The Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC) record 739 incidents of human rights violations in detention and confinement centres related to health problems and lack of medical care, between 1 March 2023 and 31 May 2024.

According to the CDPCAmong the most frequent violations documented over the past year are failure to comply with medical prescriptions and failure to provide medication by the authorities.

Among these cases is that of the prisoner Carlos Samir Cárdenas Cartaya, who went nearly two months without receiving medical assistance, as he himself reported by telephone from the Zona Cero inmate camp, which belongs to the prison. Eastern Combined.

Cárdenas Cartaya said that Dr. Suanelis Pérez Quesada, head of Primary Care at the prison, was not providing him with the medication he needs to treat the glaucoma he suffers from in both eyes, which, she said, “has already left him blind in his left eye.”

Besides, Jorge Bello Dominguez and Jorge Luis Garcia Garcia more than 72 hours have passed without medical attention.

Independent journalist Bello Domínguez spent an entire weekend with an untreated toothache at Combinado del Este, reported Marti News.

For its part, the family of Jorge Luis Garcia Garcia He has complained that he has a tumor in his neck, the result of the violence used during his arrest, which the authorities at the Boniato prison in Santiago de Cuba have refused to treat.
