A tragic traffic accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, October 5, 2024, on the Bogotá – La Mesa road. A bus carrying 28 students from the National Educational Corporation (CEN) lost control and overturned, leaving five people dead and 23 injured.

Relief agencies and fire units quickly arrived at the scene of the accident to attend to the emergency and provide medical assistance to the injured who were transferred to different health centers. The magnitude of the tragedy has led authorities to begin investigations to determine the causes of the accident.

“It started to smell very burnt”: survivor of the accident recounted the moment
A 20-year-old student, who was on board the bus, recounted the moments before the accident in an interview with Noticias Caracol. The young woman described that minutes before the accident, the vehicle began to brake, but the driver chose to accelerate instead of stopping. “It started to smell very burnt and we all said ‘come on, it’s smelling very burnt’, and the man did nothing; “He decided to continue.” commented the student.
She explained that the driver tried to maneuver to stop the bus, but apparently he had already run out of brakes.
At a critical moment, the driver and the teacher looked at each other, and the latter alerted the students. «The teacher once tells us: ‘guys hold on tight’; “We all clung to each other, I curled up in a ball, the man swerved about two cars, he was going super fast, when the event happened and the car overturned.”

Investigations in Progress
The authorities began an exhaustive analysis of the accident. “Videos from the area are being analyzed and tire-type tracks and drag marks from overturning have been found. “All of this will help us determine the causes that led to this tragic event,” explained Colonel Claudia Romero, director of Transit and Traffic.
Relatives of the victims and the wider community are waiting for answers, while the pain over the loss of young lives is deeply felt.
