MADRID, Spain.- Independent feminist platforms Tense Wings And I Do Believe You in Cuba confirmed This Monday a new femicide on the Island, raising to 31 the number of crimes of this type so far in 2024. The victim has been identified as Yumary Morales Guerra, a 28-year-old woman who was murdered by her ex-partner.
The tragic incident occurred on July 15 at Morales’ home, located in the rural town of Suferry, in the province of Ciego de Ávila. According to information provided by Tense WingsYumary was unable to recover from the serious injuries inflicted by her attacker on July 8. In addition, in the same attack, the young woman’s father, Félix Morales, was also killed, and a friend of the victim was injured.
After sending their condolences to the families of the deceased, the organizations reported an underreporting that includes four other possible femicides and six cases pending access to police investigation in the provinces of Havana, Villa Clara and Santiago de Cuba.
The year 2023 was particularly alarming for femicides in Cuba, with 89 verified cases, the highest number since independent groups began collecting data in 2019.
According to the report for last year, presented by the platforms defending women’s rights, of this total of feminicides, 67 were with knives; 39 of the victims They were between 31 and 45 years old (the most represented age group); in 12 of the cases there were previous complaints that were ignored by the police; and 76 of the perpetrators were partners or ex-partners of the victims.
It is worth remembering that these figures only reflect the cases verified by the platforms, and the real number of femicides in the country could be significantly higher. The concealment of information by the Cuban government, the criminalization of the network of observers and the lack of human and material resources are some of the reasons that prevent independent platforms from carrying out a complete record of the situation on the Island.
