MIAMI, United States. – The young Cuban Reiniel Pérez, 23, won the thirty-fifth edition of the Loewe Poetry Prize with his book “The syllables and the body”, according to reported this Tuesday the news agency EFE.
The Loewe Poetry Prize is one of the most prestigious of its kind and is endowed with 25,000 euros.
The jury, chaired by Víctor García de la Concha, described the award-winning work as “a book of carnal love, almost obsessive, that delves into the sexual life of words and enjoys the presence of the body’s love, as an emotional theme and eternal”.
Reiniel Pérez was born on April 6, 1999 in Saint Clareprovincial capital of Villa Clara.
According to the jury’s decision, the young man wrote “a unitary and rhythmic book, a poem in parts, with great expressive ease and a desire for innovation.”
In addition to its president, Víctor García de la Concha, the jury was made up of Gioconda Belli, Antonio Colinas, Aurora Egido, Margo Glantz, Juan Antonio González Iglesias, Carme Riera, Jaime Siles, Luis Antonio de Villena and Orlando Mondragón.
According to Siles, “The syllables and the body” is a book “surprising due to the unity of its 10 long movements, maintained in tone, a type of verse and an admirable temperature of language”.
For his part, Egido considered that the young Cuban’s book “is an incarnation of poetry in motion, with very successful poetic images in sequence, where the song and the story are very well linked and elaborated. It is a long and complete love poem, with brilliant poetic prose”.
In the call for the thirty-fifth edition of the Loewe Poetry Prize, 1,976 participants from 38 countries participated.
Every year, since 1987, the Loewe Foundation announces this international award, the most important awarded in Spanish outside the institutional sphere, to promote quality in poetic creation in the Spanish language.
The award ceremony and presentation of the book, which will be published within the Visor de Poesía collection, will take place in March 2023, according to EFE.
