MIAMI, United States. – Young Cuban-American comedian Marcello Hernández, former creative director of “Only in Dade”a popular site that highlights “the good, the bad, and the fun” of Miamidebuted last Saturday on the famous American show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL).
Hernandez was joined by Colin Jost, a cast member from the show, to offer his humorous take on the differences between Latino and American baseball players.
The appearance of the young Cuban-American on SNL occurs about to start the Major League Baseball (MLB) championship.
“Thank you, New York!” The young man began his speech. At the time, when asked by Jost if he was a baseball fan, he replied, “Well, my mother is from Cuba and my father is from the Dominican Republic… So obviously they are divorced. That also means that I love baseball,” he said.
He immediately continued joking: “You know, Latinos dominate. I am not saying that we are better by nature. I’m just saying we’re more fun to watch. I mean, who do you prefer to see? Tanner from Kentucky? Or a guy they call ‘Daddy’, and no one knows why? This guy got so good at his job that they started calling him Dad!”
Then, he explained how Latino hitters behave “differently.” “This guy pulls a chain out of nowhere, he tells the pitcher to relax and then throws Jesus in. Once he gets to bat, he’s all hips. Everyone in the audience is pregnant by the time he’s done!” he joked.
He also assured that when a Latino is interviewed after a game it is not “boring”.
“If they manage to blurt out a sentence in English, it’s not about the game. The reporter says, ‘What went through your head with that 3-2 slider?’ Ramón replies: ‘Man, I love Miami, man. The weather, the people, the food is incredible.”
The SNL audience laughed and repeatedly applauded Hernandez. Even filmmaker Billy Corben congratulated the young man and called his debut “epic.”
