MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban regime granted parole to the young Canadian Michael Carey20 years old, who was sent to prison after July 11, 2021 (11J) for allegedly throwing a stone at a patrol car.
The independent journalist Mónica Baró Sánchez, based in the United States, indicated this Friday that the news was communicated to her personally by Yvis Abadin, Carey’s mother.
“The Cuban-Canadian citizen, one of the boys imprisoned in the middle of the repressive wave that followed the social outbreak of 9/11, has been released on probation and his sentence ends in May. The news was just given to me by his mother,” the reporter reported.
Michael Carey was taken into custody on July 12, 2021 while sitting on his block with an underage friend. The authorities accused him of throwing a stone at a patrol that was on that block hours before his arrest.
“He always denied having been the perpetrator of the act and the only evidence against him was an alleged stone smell test,” Mónica Baró recalled in her publication.
The young Canadian was asked for four years in prison and sentenced to two. During his stay in the Western Youth Prison, he became ill and lost considerable weight.
Although she was finally released on parole, the reporter said that “nobody is going to make amends for the time she spent unfairly in prison.”
