Without prior notice to his family, last Friday, December 12, the political prisoner was transferred from a hospital room to the Cuba Sí prison.
HAVANA, Cuba. – Political prisoner Yosvany Rosell García Caso is “practically incommunicado” in the maximum rigor Holguin prison Cuba Sí (also known as El Yayal), he told this Tuesday CubaNet his wife, Mailín Rodríguez Sánchez. Without prior notice to his family, last Friday, December 12, García Caso was transferred from the “Lucía Íñiguez Landín” Clinical Surgical Hospital, in the city of Holguín, to Cuba Sí.
This Tuesday, for the first time since his transfer to said prison, the political prisoner was able to establish telephone communication with his family. In the call he stated that, upon arriving at prison, after 40 days of hunger strike, he had to stop eating food again for a day “because the authorities had not complied with the agreement” between both parties, which was to keep him in an isolation cell.
His wife only found out about the transfer two days later, on Sunday, December 14. “I have not received any call or notice about him so far, the right he has upon being transferred to make a phone call to inform his family member,” he reported that day on Facebook.
This Monday, Rodríguez Sánchez went to the prison and, there, although she could not see her husband, she was informed that he was “well” and “recovering” from the prolonged hunger strike which starred between October 23 and December 1.
The 37-year-old was on hunger strike for 40 days demanding his freedom or be sent to an isolation cell in prison. He was admitted to the provincial hospital of Holguín, where he remained for about 10 days in the intermediate therapy room and handcuffed to a bed.
The family also reported restrictions on access to the hospital, including the initial refusal to allow visitors, despite the physical proximity to the room where he was admitted.
Last week he had been transferred to the prison ward of the same hospital institution after his health improved. However, his wife has reported not having had access to the medical file or detailed information about his state of health. The response to their claims by the hospital directors was that only prison system officials would have that information.
For the Cubalex Legal Information Center, the systematic denial of information constitutes a violation of human rights. “Its violation in the health context acquires a greater connotation because it is a risk factor for patient safety, and hinders the objective of building health systems centered on the patient,” indicated the NGO on its website.
The organization also expressed concern about the state of health and integrity of García Caso, as well as the impact on his family.
Yosvany García Caso He is serving a 15-year prison sentence for participating in the demonstrations on July 11, 2021 (11J) in Holguín. This was one of the largest sentences handed down against 9/11 protesters on the Island, who numbered more than 1,000.
