More than 24 hours have passed since the information about the alleged capture of Alex Saab and Raúl Gorrin was disseminated and there are still no official statements. The attorney general of Venezuela initially assured La FM that the news was false, but shortly after he contacted him again to affirm that he was unaware of the issue.
Following the news published in international media about the alleged capture of former minister Alex Saab, on Wednesday, February 4, the attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, initially denied the information in statements to La FM. However, minutes later he contacted the Colombian media again to rectify, ensuring that, in reality, he “does not know about the issue.”
Late on Wednesday night, Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly and brother of the person in charge of the national Executive, Delcy Rodríguez, declared that he had no information about the alleged capture of Saab and the president of Globovisión, Raúl Gorrín, claiming that this “is not part of his duties.”
More than 24 hours have passed since the information was disseminated and there are still no official statements regarding the whereabouts and situation of Alex Saab and Raúl Gorrin.
In an exclusive telephone conversation with SuchWhich, Saab’s lawyer reiterated that the alleged capture is false. As proof of this, he highlighted the presence of Camilla Fabri at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, where she received a group of Venezuelan migrants deported from the United States. According to the lawyer, this reflects a climate of normality, although he stressed that, for the moment, neither Saab nor Fabri have the intention of giving statements.

Despite the confusion generated by Tarek William Saab’s statements, close sources contradict his version and assure that Alex Saab is indeed deprived of liberty. This was stated to La FM by Zair Mundaray, former director general of the Public Ministry, who pointed out that the Venezuelan Government usually handles captures differently from other countries.
“The regime can keep someone detained, missing or in what is known as a ‘freezer’ for days, weeks or even months, without officially recognizing the detention,” Mundaray emphasized.
On the other hand, he emphasized that there is a strategic interest in denying Saab’s arrest, because in Venezuela, in the event of a possible change of command, “the entire system is shaken.” According to Mundaray, this happens in any power structure: “When a powerful figure falls, a very complex internal struggle breaks out,” he explained.
