The National Emergency Office (Onemi), together with the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin), changed the alert from Green to Yellow for the Láscar volcano, located in San Pedro de Atacama, due to the increase in its seismic activity .
Both organizations developed a technical table with the authorities of the Antofagasta region due to the eruptive pulse of the volcano registered in the vicinity of the small local town of Talabre.

In coordination with the definition of the technical table and reinforcing the security conditions for the surrounding residents, the Onemi of Antofagasta with the Regional Presidential Delegation defined a security perimeter of five kilometers around the crater.
Sernageomin National Director(s), David Montenegro, commented to Cooperative that “from the beginning we have monitored the situation and, in addition, a team of service professionals will travel to the area to hold informative meetings with authorities and the community. The monitoring of the Láscar volcano will be maintained by the RNVV, an organization that responsible for monitoring the most active volcanoes in our country”.
For his part, the regional director of Onemi, Rodrigo Munizaga, stated that part of the established courses of action will be that “there will be police controls, some patrols and we will give precise indications for the tourism sector, especially agencies and tour operators to avoid entering this area of the volcano”.
Along these lines, he stressed that “this perimeter will be allowed for five days or until conditions warrant it, ensuring that there are no conditions that could affect people’s health. Special instructions will also be given, courses of action and guidelines for the agricultural sector, especially for grazing on the slopes of the Láscar volcano”.
“We are working together with all our authorities, delegates, governor and our police and technical agencies to be able to give people peace of mind that at this time they are in normal conditions, but, nevertheless, we are going to secure the site to have the certainty that we are not going to have major repercussions,” Munizaga closed.
