Bronchiolitis is a common and sometimes serious illness. The most common cause is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). More than half of babies are exposed to this virus in their first year of life, according to the medical portal Medline Plus.
Symptoms associated with this condition include: purple skin due to lack of oxygen (urgent treatment is needed), breathing difficulties including wheezing and shortness of breath, cough, fatigue, fever, muscles around the ribs sagging as the child tries to inhale (called retraction), the baby’s nostrils flaring when breathing, and rapid breathing (tachypnea).
