After being delivered in the border line of San Ysidro – Tijuana to Mexican authorities, Yarrington was transferred by air to the Toluca airport and subsequently, he was admitted to the Federal Maximum Security Prison of the Altiplano, in the State of Mexico.
According to the Judicial Power of the Federation, although he was summoned to appear before a court in Tamaulipas, Yarrington participated in the hearing by videoconference from the Altiplano, with the aim of avoiding its transfer to that state and the logistics implications that entails such a movement.
Being a investigation folder initiated under the old criminal justice system, the hearing was held behind closed doors.
Tomás Yarrington is accused of having received resources from the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas to finance his campaign to the Gubernatura de Tamaulipas, between 1998 and 1999.
In addition, he is allegedly pointed out to have washed money in favor of these criminal organizations during his term, according to an investigation carried out by the United States Anti -Drug Agency (DEA), released in 2011.
This investigation motivated that the then Attorney General’s Office initiate a investigation folder against him in 2012
Tomás Yarrington remained a fugitive from Justice for several years, until in 2017, the Italy’s police arrested the former governor in Florence, as part of the collaboration and after having collated the red file he had at Interpol.
In 2018 he was extradited to the United States, for the investigations carried out by the authorities of that country for drug trafficking and money laundering.
