On the basis of decisive home runs by Aaron Judge and Nick Foster, respectively, the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins achieved dramatic victories in the Major Leagues on Sunday.
Judger’s tenth-inning two-man homer gave the Yankees a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros.
The Yankees, who were the victims of a three-handed no-hitter against the Astros on Saturday, were hitless until the seventh inning on Sunday.
Yankees and Marlins
Slugger Giancarlo Stanton had ended the Mulos’ historic no-hitter drought with a homer in the seventh, and DJ LeMahieu followed with a two-run homer in the eighth.
With his bombshell in the tenth, Judge lifted the Yankees, leaders of the Majors.
With the win, the Yankees are 53-20 and tied for the third-best 73-game start in the Majors since 1930, trailing only the 2001 Seattle Mariners and the 1998 Yankees themselves.
Jose Urquidy was eight outs into Houston’s second no-hitter before Stanton connected, cutting the Astros’ lead to 3-1.
The victory went to reliever King (5-1) and the disaster for firefighter Seth Martínez (0-1).
For the ninth Texan, the Venezuelan second baseman José Altuve hit a four-corner shot, in front of the Cuban starter Néstor Cortés.
Fortes decides with a home run
In Miami, the rookie of Puerto Rican origin Nick Fortes hit a solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning, so that the Marlins left the New York Mets lying on the grass 3×2.
Fortes punished Adam Ottavino (2-2) with his wood, finally the defeated one.
The Mets, leaders of the National East Division, could not get the sweep in three games.
The palms went to reliever Tanner Scott (3-2), who struck out James McCann in the ninth with two men on base to end a threat at the time.
Marlins starter Daniel Castaño pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four.
Slugger Brandon Nimmo homered to lead off the third and Spaniard Pete Alonso dispatched an RBI double later in the inning to put New York up 2×1.
The Miami ninth responded with a bombshell from Venezuelan Miguel Rojas in the lower half of that chapter.
After Alonso’s biangular, pitcher Castaño retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced.
