Xiomara Castro, president of Honduras, tests positive for Covid-19

the leftist Xiomara Castro, who assumed the presidency of Honduras on January 27, reported on Sunday that he was infected with Covid-19 but that he continues to attend to state affairs in a “non-face-to-face” manner.

“The result of the PCR (Covid-19) yesterday (Saturday) was negative, today’s (Sunday) is positive,” the 62-year-old president, who replaced Juan Orlando Hernández in office for the 2022-2026 period, announced on her Twitter account.

“According to the exams, it is mild. With the blessing of the Creator of the universe, I continue to attend my Government Plan to return to democratic and constitutional order,” he added.

The president has two doses of the vaccine against Covid-19, as explained to AFP by her husband, the ousted former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009). The former president explained that the latest tests show no compromise in Castro’s lungs.

During the week, Castro carried out public activities, participating on Tuesday and Thursday in the celebrations for the 275th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin of Suyapa, in the basilica in the east of Tegucigalpa.

At the Presidential House, he swore in ministers and other officials and received a visit from boxer Teófimo López, born in New York to Honduran parents.

His predecessor Hernandez was also infected with Covid-19 in 2020 and was hospitalized with severe respiratory complications at the Military Hospital.

Honduras registers more than 40,000 infected and more than 10,500 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic coronavirus.
