WSJ: Trump's real goal is to remove Maduro from power in Venezuela

A recent editorial by Wall Street Journal suggests that The current confrontation between the United States and Nicolás Maduro entered a decisive point and that, although he has not expressed it publicly, President Donald Trump pushes for regime change in Venezuela.

The diplomatic and military pressure deployed by Washington in recent weeks would be aimed at forcing Maduro’s departure, whom Trump has repeatedly accused of leading a criminal regime.

The editorial argues that “Overthrowing Nicolás Maduro is in the national interest of the United States” and considers that an eventual collapse of the Venezuelan regime would open the door to a democratic transition with positive repercussions for the entire hemisphere.

The president’s departure, he adds, would be a “enormous leap for freedom in Latin America.”

Political scientist Walter Molina, commenting on the text, stressed that the analysis of WSJ suggests that it is no longer discussed whether there will be a political change in Venezuela, but rather how and when it will occur.

He recalled that the Venezuelan opposition affirms that The desire to replace Maduro was expressed in the elections of July 28 of last year, when Edmundo González won the presidency with more than 7 million votes.
